Washington, the District of Columbia, was designated the national capital in 1790 and became the official seat of government on November 17, 1800! It is directly between the states of Maryland and Virginia, so that no one state could lay claim to the federal government! It is famous for the White House, National Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, and amazing Smithsonian museums all along the National Mall!
