Calaveras County, California was established on February 18, 1850 and named by Gabriel Moraga for the skulls of Native Americans found along a riverbank! Calaveras is Spanish for “skulls!” Its county seat is San Andreas, and its fair is held in Angels Camp! You might recognize California Cavern, Moaning Cavern, the Jumping Frog Jubilee, and Calaveras Big Trees State Park, which are located in this county!
