Tag: Carnegie Libraries
After making his fortune in the steel industry and investments, Andrew Carnegie dedicated the last of his years to philanthropy, giving away 90% of his entire fortune to charities, universities and libraries! He’d been inspired by the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore and went on to fund 2,509 libraries in nearly every state plus 11 other countries! His rules were that the local governments needed to demonstrate need, provide the building site, run the library from public funds, and give free service to all!
