After Mexico won its independence from Spanish rule in 1821, the colonized territory of Alta California came under control of the new Mexican government! The 21 Spanish missions were privatized and most of their land sold to private ranchers. These wealthy landowners controlled most of Alta California until American annexation in 1848!
