It was the ultimate American road trip, the heir to the Transcontinental Railroad! Starting in 1926, Route 66 paved its way along the National Old Trails Highway, connecting rural areas to major metropolises between Chicago and Los Angeles! It was an escape route for Dust Bowl refugees, a crucial corridor for transporting troops during World War II, and later, a popular tourist pastime that gave us both the kitschy roadside attraction and the bumper sticker! Though a more modern highway system replaced Route 66 in 1984, many filling stations and attractions still stand. Take some time to check them out and don’t forget to look for Green Book sites along the way!
