What is it? The remains of California’s first oil boom town!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Named after pioneer oil developer Charles Alexander Mentry, who in 1876 drilled the first successful oil well in California. His restored home and barn and Felton School remain here where the Star Oil Company, one of the predecessors of Standard Oil of California, was born.

OTHER TIDBITS: The oil from this town fueled the Pioneer Oil Refinery just east of here!

Don’t look up this address on Google Maps! Take the Lyons Avenue exit from I-5 and head west. Lyons Avenue will turn into Pico Canyon Road! Go all the way to the end of Pico Canyon Road, and you will end up in a dirt parking lot within eyesight of Mentryville!
