Leo Carrillo Ranch
Landmark #1020 San Diego County Visited: February 10, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Between 1937 and 1940, these adobe and wood buildings were built by actor Leo Carrillo as a retreat, working ranch, and tribute to old California culture and architecture. The Leo Carrillo Ranch, with its Flying “LC” brand, originally covered 2,538 acres and was frequented by Carrillo and his friends until 1960. Leo Carrillo was a strong, positive, and well-loved role model who sought to celebrate California’s early Spanish heritage, through a life of good deeds and charitable causes.

OTHER TIDBITS: Leo Carrillo was a Broadway and film actor most remembered for his screen roles in The Phantom of the Opera, Viva Villa!, and The Cisco Kid, the first television series shot in color!

Off-screen, he served on the California Beaches and Parks Commission for 18 years, pushing for the development of Los Angeles’ Olvera Street, the Los Angeles Arboretum and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, not to mention the acquisition of Hearst Castle by the state parks system!

Descended from an old family line stretching at least to the Canary Islands in 1470, his grandparents owned Coronado Island for a spell, and his father was the first mayor of Santa Monica! His grandmother was also a member of the prominent Bandini family. In line with his landed ancestors, Leo Carrillo purchased Rancho Los Kiotes in 1937 and turned it into a working ranch!

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
