Mission San Miguel Arcángel!

Mission San Miguel Arcángel
Landmark #326 San Luis Obispo County Visited: June 8, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The refurbished 16th mission (of 21) founded by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This site was selected because of the great number of Salinan Indians that lived in the vicinity. Fray Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, OFM, second president of the California missions, founded San Miguel Arcángel on July 25, 1797. The 16th in a chain of 21 Franciscan missions, it influenced not only the native population, but the history of California as a whole.

OTHER TIDBITS: This mission was named for the mighty Michael the Archangel, who is known for having led the great battle that cast Lucifer out of Heaven! He’s seen as a protector of the sick and of Israel, even blurring the lines of Judaic teaching that prohibit prayer to angels instead of God!

Mission San Miguel was established to fill in the space between Mission San Antonio de Padua and Mission San Luis Obispo. It fell in a fire in 1806 and was rebuilt by 1821. After Mexico took over, its land came under the ownership of William Reed and Petronillo Rios but became a commercial and retail space after the entire Reed family was horrifically murdered in 1846!

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
