| What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The Outdoor Art Club was designed in 1904 by Bernard Maybeck, internationally known American architect. Particularly notable for its unusual roof truss system, the building exemplifies Maybeck’s creative use of natural materials. The Club, founded in 1902 by 35 Mill Valley women, is dedicated to preserving the area’s natural environment.
OTHER TIDBITS: The women who founded the club got the idea from watching a group of workmen cutting down redwoods in the town square. They were so appalled that they founded a club to preserve their beautiful natural surroundings! The club has provided community cleanup, disaster relief, and educational support for Mill Valley and beyond since its inception! Even today, they are a force for good to be reckoned with! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
