Cresta Blanca Winery!

Cresta Blanca Winery
Landmark #586 Alameda County Visited: May 31, 2014 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque commemorating the wine-making work of Charles Wetmore!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Here Charles A. Wetmore planted his vineyard in 1882. The Cresta Blanca wine he made from its fruit won for California the first International Award, the highest honor at the 1889 Paris Exposition, first bringing assurance to California wine growers that they could grow wines comparable to the finest in the world.

OTHER TIDBITS: No matter how much it did for California wine, the Cresta Blanca winery was no match for Prohibition! It shut down and changed hands many times over the years, but now it is part of the Wente Family Winery, which honors Charles Wetmore on one of their Cabernet Sauvignons!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Buy a bottle of wine!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:

    1. Hello, fellow Bill! That’s a great question. Cresta Blanca is now owned by Wente Vineyards, so I don’t believe so. You might check out their Wines page or email them directly to find out. Good luck!
