| What is it? | The little town of Rough and Ready is still rough and ready! |
| What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Established in 1849 and named in honor of General Zachary Taylor, after the Rough and Ready Company of miners from Wisconsin, this was one of the principal towns of Nevada County. In 1850, articles of secession were drawn up establishing the “Republic of Rough and Ready.” As a result of disastrous fires, only a few structures remain today that were built in the 1850s.
OTHER TIDBITS: What the plaque leaves out is why this little town wanted to secede from the Union! In short, they wanted to dodge new taxes on mines and pressures to prohibit alcohol! The idea was the brainchild of Colonel E.F. Brundage, and he led over 3,000 people in glorious secession… until July 4th came around and the miners realized they couldn’t participate in the festivities because they no longer belonged to America. Secession adjourned! |
