Chaves County Courthouse!

Chaves County Courthouse
What is it? The original courthouse and jail of Chaves County, New Mexico!
What makes it historical? This green-domed courthouse building is a rare example of the Beaux-Arts style in New Mexico! It was built in anticipation of New Mexico’s impending statehood in 1912, because the new constitution would make all county debt part of the state debt. So the members of Chaves County figured they’d go big or go home! After auctioning off the old courthouse for $580, the firm of Lyon and Axtel constructed this one at a cost of $164,000 (over $4 million by 2018 standards)! It definitely earned its reputation as the most magnificent courthouse in New Mexico!
