Smithville Apothecary!

Smithville Apothecary
What is it? Currently a store called the Jewelry Box of Historic Smithville!
What makes it historical? Built in 1885 by Dr. John Lewis Lane, this little store served as the apothecary for the town of Manahawkin! It’s historically significant, less for its association to him (as the building would begin to change hands less than a decade after he opened it) than for its representation of a building style that was once widespread throughout New Jersey but has since been mostly eradicated! Over the years, this building changed ownership multiple times, serving as a phone company, a post office, and a girl scout lodge until the Smithville Inn purchased it and had it transported 21 miles from Manahawkin to its current location on the Village Greene!
How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Galloway Township Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
