Build in 1745 to irrigate the fields of San Antonio’s southernmost mission, the Espada Acequia was part of a 15-mile system of aqueducts that kept 3,500 acres of farmland well hydrated! Of San Antonio’s original seven aqueducts, only this one still diverts water from the San Antonio River in the exact way it was designed to do over 300 years ago! It’s been able to do so because it relies on nothing more than gravity to keep the water flowing! |
