Wadi Rum Protected Area!

Wadi Rum Protected Area
What is it? Wadi Rum is a vast preserve of red sands and towering cliffs in southern Jordan!
What makes it wonderful? Wadi Rum is home to a otherworldly landscape of deep red sand dunes, stark cliffs, and picturesque rock formations that have been used to portray alien planets in at least seven movies! Despite its starkness, there is archaeological evidence that humans have lived here for at least 12,000 years, leaving behind over 25,000 petroglyphs and 20,000 inscriptions, which chronicle the development of the Arabic alphabet! It’s also home to over 130 indigenous animals like the ibex, the hyrax, and as of 2002, a reintroduced herd of Arabian oryx!
How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer with World Heritage Volunteers!
  • Donate to UNESCO!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? On Wadi Rum Road
13 miles (20.8 km) east of Desert Highway
Rashidiyah, Jordan

From Amman: ~194mi (313km) — 3.3hrs
From Aqaba: ~39mi (63km) — 0.7hrs
From Irbid: ~242mi (390km) — 4.1hrs
From Kerak: ~158mi (255km) — 2.7hrs

When should I go? Tours of Wadi Rum leave at various times of day, but in terms of season, I recommend visiting in fall, winter, or spring because the heat of summer will be miserable! The visitor center is open daily from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM!
