Punxsutawney Post Office

What Is the Punxsutawney Post Office?

What was once a US Post Office is now the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center!

What Makes It Historical?

One of the last commissions of James Knox Taylor, this Classical Revival post office opened its doors in 1914 and managed the mail until 1998! Before it opened, different buidings, from general stores to the Hotel Pantall, handled these responsibilities, but the flourishing of the coal industry here demanded more organization!

Today, many historic post offices are closing across the country, but this one has been preserved through reimagining! Today, in the “weather capital of the world,” it’s now a Weather Discovery Center, where folks of all ages can learn about seasons, weather patterns, and their local celebrity groundhog!

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Become a member of the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission!
  • Donate to the Weather Discovery Center!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
