Landmark #784 | San Diego County | Visited: April 21, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque marking the start of El Camino Real, connecting the 21 missions of California! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This plaque was placed on the 250th anniversary of the birth of California’s apostle, Padre JunĂpero Serra, OFM, to mark El Camino Real as he knew it and helped blaze it.
OTHER TIDBITS: Missions were constructed to be a day’s walk apart on El Camino Real! That ensured rapid exchange of supplies and reinforcement in case of trouble! Basically, if you were to walk the entirety of El Camino Real, as Padre Serra knew it and helped blaze it, you could walk from San Diego to San Francisco in 21 days! See where it ended here! |
