Delaware became the 1st state of the Union on December 7, 1787! It’s named after Virginia’s first colonial governor, Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, but you can also call it The First State! Its capital is Dover, and its largest city is Wilmington! Delaware’s state motto is “Liberty and Independence!” This state is famous for Rehoboth Beach, First State National Historical Park, and the annual migration of ancient horseshoe crabs to Delaware Bay!
