Texas became the 28th state of the Union on December 29, 1845! It’s named after the word taysha, which means “friends” in the language of the Caddo people, but you can also call it The Lone Star State! Its capital is Austin, and its largest city is Houston! Texas’ state motto is “Friendship!” This state is famous for its barbecue and brisket, its stars at night, the Alamo, the Texas longhorn, Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks, Cadillac Ranch, and the mysterious Prada building in the middle of the desert outside of Marfa!
